I arrived. Worked late. Thought I was gonna miss the first band. Saw Bob of Fearless Records. He told me that 30footFALL had cancelled. SHIT!!!!! What do you mean 30footFALL cancelled????!? I heard that a lot of people left after they found out. Dammit and that's how the show started for me and I thought the rest of the show would be ruined by that. Turns out the best was still in store. I went inside and Fourth in Line was already setting up. The guitarist, bassist, and drummer were doing their sound check and I got a chance to form an opinion about the singer. To me he looked like he could be another singer for Suicidal Tendencies. He had the basketball jersey on and I think he had a bandana or at least a backwards hat on. Oh well, their sound wasn't like ST though, they sounded more like Straight Faced but still different. I think they were trying to be a little too much like Straight Faced though. They had their friends and fans turnout for them and pleased them with songs like "Searchlight", "Religion Killing Policy", "Distort", etc. On their last song, the singer of Trip Hop Clan, who is friends with them, sang along on stage. They were alright but I didn't feel like buying any of their merch after hearing them.
Next up was Texas' own Dynamite Boy. Their first national tour as a Fearless band, these guys were the black sheep of the bill. Their pop punk sound didn't please some of the hardcore kids in the audience but surprisingly enough, one by one the kids crowded around the stage enticed by the sound. In my opinion they tried to play to the crowd too much with songs like "Falling Down", "Mr Right", and "I Want You Back" which all have a bit of hardcore sound to them but they still played all the catchy melodic songs like "Julie H." and "Hard Times". I decided to be a dork and support the band by being way up front singing along to all the words since I was one of the few that knew them. After their set I did noticed a lot of kids crowding to the merch table to buy stuff. That's great for them.
Next up was Deathy By Stereo, and the singer Ephraim, showed up right before the band started playing, and then got teased about being late. The crowd ate these guys up!! They loved them. They didn't have a set list and were just playing songs shouted out by fans which showed how they can pull out any son instead of knowin which ones they had to play. That takes talent. Kids were being popped up into the air during the set, and one stupid dork was thrown up and grabbed the lights and the show was almost stopped because of him. Nevertheless the show went on and the kid got booted. There was almost a fight going on in the pit and the security guards were keeping a close eye on it but nothing came out of it. They played with such great emotion the crowd kept wanting more and more and more. Too bad they couldn't stay, but the best was still yet to come.
Now I didn't give their newest CD the greatest of reviews in the last issue of LIVE, but seeing Jughead's Revenge made me respect their talent. They took the stage and started playing "These Valley Streets" which is off their new CD and then went into "49 and 61". The crowd was kind of tired after Death By Stereo but it wasn't too long before they got their second wind and started the pit for JR. THat wasn't as wild as it was going to get though.. After playing more or their old stuff, they only played one more song from their new album. Eventually security told everyone to get offstage but after the next song they said fuck it and then the stage diving began.. it was so crazy I was up in the front and it felt like I was just in one big huge washing machine. I couldn't even move, I was just being swayed by the crowd's actions. To top it all off, stage divers were diving on top of us in every which way. They played "Pain" and the crowd went even more nuts. The stage divers doubled, everyone was pushing harder, and there was even a sing a long. I was, fortunately, one of the three who were up there with the mic singing the chorus. Damn that felt good. Jughead's Revenge.. you guys kick! And I can't wait to see you again.
